A newly uncovered video of the 9/11 Twin Tower collapse has emerged, offering a unique perspective nearly 23 years after the tragic events. Captured by Kei Sugimoto from the rooftop of a New York City building, the footage was recorded on a Sony VX2000 camera and was only recently uploaded to YouTube after Sugimoto rediscovered it while digitizing old tapes.
Sugimoto, who was 23 at the time of the attacks, initially thought a fire had broken out in one of the towers. However, after witnessing the second plane’s impact, he realized the gravity of the situation. He described the moment as life-changing, stating, “I thought this was an accident, but when the second plane hit, it became clear this was a terrorist attack.”
The video, showing the billowing smoke and the eventual collapse of the towers, has gone viral on social media, with viewers noting its “crystal clear” quality and rare perspective. Many commenters expressed shock at seeing new footage decades later and wondered how much historical material remains undiscovered in attics and basements.
Sugimoto explained that he decided to release the footage after realizing that old video tapes degrade over time, leading to potential data loss. Viewers have thanked him for sharing the video, calling it a sobering reminder of the tragic day that changed the world forever.
