Ethiopian athlete Lamecha Girma suffered a severe fall during the men’s 3,000m steeplechase final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, leading to a dramatic and concerning scene on the track. The world record holder tripped over a hurdle, causing him to hit his head and back hard on the ground. He lay motionless as other competitors jumped over him, prompting immediate attention from medical personnel.
Commentator Leigh Diffey noted, “I’ve never seen a fall that heavy,” highlighting the severity of the incident. Girma was stretchered off the track and taken to a nearby medical facility for further examination. Fortunately, he regained consciousness shortly after and was reported to be in good condition by an Ethiopian coach.
Paris 2024 organizers released a statement expressing their concern and extending best wishes for Girma’s recovery. The incident occurred as Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali went on to win the gold medal, defending his Olympic title with a time of 8:06.05. American Kenneth Rooks secured silver, and Kenyan Abraham Kibiwot took bronze. This event marked a significant moment in the sport, with El Bakkali becoming the first athlete in 86 years to defend the Olympic steeplechase title.
