Hours into 2024, a prediction by the famed 16th-century astrologer Nostradamus seemingly came to fruition with a significant earthquake in Japan, reaffirming his reputation as the Prophet Of Doom. Known for his cryptic prophecies compiled in the 1555 book “Les Propheties,” Nostradamus has been credited with predicting numerous historical events, likened to a centuries-old version of “The Simpsons” for his prophetic accuracy.
This recent event aligns with his forecast for 2024, where he ominously noted, “The dry Earth will become more parched and there will be great floods.” Followers of Nostradamus believe this could refer to the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan’s Western coast on New Year’s Day, resulting in 48 fatalities, the destruction of buildings, and the initiation of tsunamis reaching up to 3 feet in height. The quake led to widespread panic, with residents fleeing to higher ground as waves devastated coastal areas, dragging homes and vehicles into the sea. Currently, rescue operations are underway with a 3,000-member team searching for around 120 people reported missing.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, addressing the urgency of the situation, stated in an emergency meeting, “The search and rescue of those impacted by the quake is a battle against time.”
Adding to the premonitory atmosphere, an incident last summer where divers in Taiwan found an injured giant oarfish, known in Japanese mythology as the “Doomsday fish,” is believed by some to foretell earthquakes. This belief, rooted in the legend that the deep-sea creature surfaces before seismic activities, has led some to connect its sighting with the recent earthquake. One individual on X, formerly Twitter, remarked on New Year’s Day, “The legend is that if you see an oarfish (DOOMSDAY FISH), it is a warning sign from higher powers that disasters such as earthquakes are soon to occur,” recalling the 2011 Fukushima disaster that was preceded by similar sightings.
While the scientific community dismisses these claims, followers of Nostradamus and psychic enthusiasts suggest that the “dry Earth” prophecy might also allude to the escalating climate crisis, characterized by increasing droughts and wildfires. With the previous year marking the hottest on record and predictions of continued extreme temperatures for 2024, the prophecy seems to resonate with current environmental concerns. Whether coincidence or clairvoyance, the events have certainly reignited interest in Nostradamus’s predictions and their relevance to contemporary global phenomena.
