Canadian pole vaulter and OnlyFans star Alysha Newman recently went viral for her unconventional bronze medal celebration at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After becoming the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in pole vaulting since 1912, Newman celebrated by twerking on live TV. Her playful and unexpected gesture left the audience in shock and led to mixed reactions from viewers and commentators alike.

Newman cleared a height of 4.85 meters on her second attempt, securing the bronze medal behind Australia’s Nina Kennedy and USA’s Katie Moon. Despite experiencing what appeared to be a hamstring injury, Newman quickly revealed it was a setup for her celebratory dance. She ran in front of the cheering crowd, bent her legs, placed her hands on her thighs, and started twerking, which was met with giggles and a stunned reaction from the commentators. BBC commentators were caught off guard, saying, “I’m not sure about that celebration.”

Addressing her performance and the viral moment, Newman told TSN, “I’m so excited. I laugh because getting third is, I mean I’ve never got third, but it’s funny because you have to still wait and sit there and wait until the other girls are done. So I’m so awkwardly standing there like, ‘What do I do? Do I celebrate? Do I kiss everyone? Do I cry?’ It was a really surreal moment and it was awesome. I just feel like I’m very emotionally stable right now and just feel so honoured to be the first (women’s) pole vaulter to bring home an Olympic medal for Canada.”

Newman also opened up about her OnlyFans account in an interview with the German publication BILD. She explained that she posts a variety of content, including training sessions, nutritional advice, and other tips. “I earn money with what I post – you have to log in to find out. It makes me confident and I feel good about it,” she said. Addressing the stereotypes associated with OnlyFans, Newman added, “Of course, many people have a certain cliché when they think of OnlyFans. I can’t change many people’s minds. But this website has connected me with many fans, more than any other pole vaulter before.”

Despite the mixed reactions to her celebration, Newman remains unapologetic and confident in her choices. “What others think about it doesn’t bother me. I am who I am and I do it well,” she concluded.
