More than 80 percent of the restaurants featured on Gordon Ramsay’s “Kitchen Nightmares” have permanently closed. The show, which aired across the UK, US, France, and Spain, saw Ramsay attempting to turn around struggling eateries by giving them a brutal assessment of their problems. Despite the popularity of the show and Ramsay’s efforts, only about 19 of the 105 restaurants he visited remain operational.

The high closure rate is not entirely surprising, considering that the premise of “Kitchen Nightmares” was built on rescuing failing restaurants. Many of these establishments were already on the brink of shutting down before Ramsay’s intervention. Additionally, the show was filmed long before the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted the restaurant industry worldwide, causing many businesses to close permanently.

One notable example is Oceana Grill in New Orleans, which tried to sue Ramsay after a video of him vomiting in their restaurant resurfaced on Facebook. The restaurant claimed the footage was dramatized for the show and falsely portrayed their establishment as unsanitary. Despite these claims, Oceana Grill is one of the few restaurants from the show that is still thriving.

The lawsuit against Ramsay highlighted the lengths to which the show’s producers went to create dramatic and engaging television. According to the restaurant owners, the production team fabricated issues to increase ratings, portraying the restaurant and its staff in a negative light. This revelation adds a layer of complexity to the show’s legacy and the real impact it had on the featured businesses.

The enduring popularity of “Kitchen Nightmares” and the public’s fascination with Ramsay’s no-nonsense approach continue to spark discussions about the realities of the restaurant industry and the effectiveness of such reality TV interventions. As fans reflect on the show’s impact, the high closure rate serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the hospitality sector and the often difficult path to long-term success.
