During a Qantas flight from Sydney to Tokyo, a technical glitch in the in-flight entertainment system led to an uncomfortable situation for passengers. Due to the malfunction, the film Daddio (2023), starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, was played on all screens without the ability to pause, dim, or turn off. The movie, which includes scenes of graphic nudity and explicit sexting, was inappropriate for the families and children onboard. Passengers were unable to switch off the film, and it took almost an hour before the airline managed to change the movie to a more family-friendly option.
One passenger shared their experience on Reddit, expressing their discomfort over the explicit content, especially with children present. The passenger wrote, “How is this acceptable for a major airline?” Qantas later issued an apology, acknowledging the movie’s unsuitability and explaining that once the issue became clear, they worked to resolve it and switched to a kid-friendly movie.
Qantas has since stated that they are reviewing how such a situation occurred and assured that this kind of incident is rare. The airline reiterated its standard practice of offering family-friendly entertainment options when individual movie selections aren’t possible due to technical issues. Despite their apology, the incident has sparked discussions about in-flight entertainment systems and their potential mishaps.
