Many fans were outraged to learn that the Paris Olympics flame is not a real fire but instead composed of LED lights. The Olympic cauldron uses 40 LED lights and 200 high-pressure misting nozzles to create the illusion of flames, powered by electricity from Paris 2024 partner EDF. This marks the first time an Olympic flame has been entirely electric. While some appreciated the visual effect, others felt it disrespected the tradition and symbolism of a real burning flame.

The Paris Games’ press office stated that the electric flame should be considered the “true Olympic flame” as long as it does not go out before the end of the Games. However, to honor tradition, a lit lantern will be kept near the cauldron for public display, signifying the flame lit in Olympia from the sun’s rays. This blend of innovation and tradition aims to respect both modern advancements and historical symbolism.

The use of LED lights instead of a real flame has sparked a debate on social media about the appropriateness of this change. While some see it as a fitting evolution, others argue that it undermines the historical and symbolic significance of the Olympic flame. Critics have voiced their disappointment, with some calling it a “total disrespect to Olympic history.”

Despite the controversy, the organizers defend their decision by emphasizing the importance of the flame’s symbolism rather than its physical form. The electric flame represents a move towards sustainability and innovation, aligning with contemporary values while attempting to honor the spirit of the Olympics.
