Powerball $842 Million Jackpot-Winning Ticket Sold in Historic New Year’s Day Drawing

In a historic New Year’s Day drawing, a fortunate Powerball player from Michigan secured the grand prize, marking a momentous start to 2024. The winning ticket, sold at a Food Castle grocery store in Grand Blanc, Michigan, has catapulted the anonymous winner into the millionaire’s club with an estimated jackpot of $842 million. This prize ranks as the tenth-largest in the history of the lottery and the fifth-largest specifically for Powerball.

The winning numbers drawn were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49, with a red Powerball of 1. This event is particularly notable as it marks the first time a jackpot has been won on New Year’s Day since Powerball’s inception in 1992. The winner now faces a significant decision: opting for the full $842.4 million grand prize, paid out in 30 installments over 29 years, or choosing a one-time, lump-sum payment of approximately $425.2 million.

Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director, expressed excitement over this extraordinary beginning to the New Year, highlighting the rarity and significance of the event. The drawing not only created a new millionaire but also awarded substantial prizes to others. Two individuals from Texas and Florida each won $2 million by matching all five white numbers and utilizing the Power Play feature. Additionally, four tickets sold across California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maryland matched all five white numbers, earning their holders $1 million each.

The jackpot had been growing steadily, following 35 consecutive drawings without a winner, with the last jackpot of $1.76 million claimed in October. Michigan, known for its luck in the lottery, now boasts seven Powerball jackpot winners, including Cristy Davis, who won $70 million in February 2020.

Interestingly, Powerball had already made a millionaire earlier in the day as the clock struck midnight on the East Coast. Pamela Bradshaw of North Carolina became the first millionaire of 2024 when her number was called during the “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” show hosted by Ryan Seacrest. Bradshaw was one of five randomly selected finalists competing for the million-dollar prize.

The excitement surrounding this drawing reflects the allure of lotteries and the life-changing impact they can have. With the odds of winning the grand prize at an astronomical 1 in 292,201,338, the victory is indeed a rare and fortunate event. As the lottery resets to a $20 million grand prize for the next drawing, hopeful players will once again set their sights on the dream of becoming the next big winner.

This Powerball drawing has not only made history but also provided a thrilling start to the new year, offering a mix of anticipation, luck, and dreams realized. As the winner navigates the newfound wealth and attention, the story of this historic jackpot will undoubtedly be remembered as a highlight of lottery lore, inspiring countless individuals to try their luck in the hope of one day capturing their own piece of the Powerball dream.
