McDonald’s is facing an E. coli outbreak that has affected 49 people across 10 states, with one person tragically dying. The outbreak has been linked to the Quarter Pounder burger, leading McDonald’s to temporarily pull the item from affected locations while the CDC investigates the cause. The company has taken “swift and decisive action,” removing the Quarter Pounder and halting the use of slivered onions sourced from a specific supplier in three distribution centers.
McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger addressed the situation on Today, assuring customers that food safety is the chain’s top priority. He urged patrons to continue enjoying other menu items while the investigation is ongoing. “You can still confidently go to McDonald’s and enjoy the classics,” Erlinger stated, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to safety across its 14,000 U.S. restaurants.
Chief Supply Chain Officer Cesar Piña further explained that impacted restaurants received a “stock recovery notice” and were instructed to reach out to field managers for further assistance. McDonald’s plans to replenish the Quarter Pounder supply in coming weeks as the investigation continues, ensuring that other products remain unaffected.
Erlinger concluded by quoting the company’s founder, reminding employees and customers alike of McDonald’s core philosophy: “If you take care of our customers, the business will take care of itself.” He assured the public that the company is cooperating fully with the CDC and prioritizing public health in every decision.
