Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, known as “Raygun,” announced she is stepping away from competitive breakdancing following her viral performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Representing Australia in the women’s breaking competition, Raygun’s unorthodox moves attracted global attention and sparked mixed reactions on social media. Although her Olympic appearance boosted her recognition, Raygun revealed that the experience has brought a level of scrutiny she hadn’t previously encountered in her career.
In an interview on the Jimmy & Nath Show, Raygun shared that she still loves breakdancing but no longer plans to compete in major contests. “I’d still break, but I’m not going to compete anymore,” she said, adding that she now feels uncomfortable with the increased online attention and constant filming. Raygun noted that publicizing each performance takes away from the authentic experience she used to enjoy.
Clarifying her decision further on Australia’s The Project, she explained, “Raygun’s not retiring,” emphasizing that she will continue to dance at community events and smaller jams. Raygun stated that while she’s stepping away from elite competitions, she remains committed to the dance community and intends to participate in non-competitive gatherings.
The news of Raygun’s semi-retirement comes as breakdancing faces an uncertain future in competitive sports; it will not be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Although her Olympic journey was marked by both admiration and controversy, Raygun’s passion for dance endures as she shifts her focus back to the grassroots community level.
