Russell Brand has reportedly been removed from the “Despicable Me” franchise and replaced by British comedian Romesh Ranganathan. Brand, who previously voiced the character Dr. Nefario in the animated series, has been replaced following allegations of sexual assault that surfaced in October 2023. These allegations were part of an investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s “Dispatches” program, involving claims from four women. Brand has vehemently denied the accusations, calling them “painful and hurtful” and attributing them to his past promiscuous behavior.

The decision to replace Brand in the franchise has come as a surprise to many, particularly since there was little public announcement regarding the change. A source mentioned that Universal Pictures seemed to have made the switch discreetly, without drawing much attention to it. Brand, who has been a staple in the “Despicable Me” films since the first installment, was reportedly shocked by the decision.

Despite his removal, Brand continues to deny all allegations against him, stating that he rejects the claims “in the strongest possible terms.” Universal Pictures and Romesh Ranganathan have yet to comment on the matter. The latest film in the franchise has been a major success, grossing significant amounts worldwide, although Brand’s absence from future projects marks a notable change in the series’ lineup.
