A Russian court has imposed an astronomical fine on Google, ordering the tech giant to pay an unimaginable amount—2 undecillion rubles. This amount, which contains 36 zeros, is approximately equivalent to $20,565,635,200,000,003,000,000,000,000,000,000. The court ruled that Google must compensate Russian TV channels blocked on YouTube. These daily penalties began accumulating in 2020 when Russian media outlets, including Tsargrad TV, took Google to court over the restrictions.
Social media users have been quick to mock the absurdity of the fine, pointing out that it’s far beyond the total value of all global assets combined. The ruling includes a condition that the penalty would double weekly if the restrictions remained, leading to the theoretical sum that exceeds all conceivable wealth on Earth. One user humorously remarked, “Seems unlikely they’ll be popping out to the bank this morning to arrange that.”
The case against Google originated after the company blocked several Russian channels, which included controversial outlets like the now-defunct Internet Research Agency. In total, 17 TV channels have filed legal claims against Google. Despite the court’s ruling, it remains highly improbable that Google will attempt to pay such a sum.
