Kaya Clementine Breen, a 20-year-old California student, has filed a lawsuit against multiple doctors and healthcare providers, alleging they misdiagnosed her with gender dysphoria at age 11 and rushed her into irreversible medical treatments. Breen claims her diagnosis led to puberty blockers at 12, cross-sex hormones by 13, and a double mastectomy at just 14. The lawsuit asserts her mental health, impacted by anxiety, depression, and past trauma, was ignored in favor of treatments solely focused on her gender identity.
Breen revealed she wished healthcare providers had recommended comprehensive therapy instead of immediately addressing gender dysphoria. She stated that the therapy she received didn’t connect her struggles with deeper issues. It wasn’t until starting dialectical behavior therapy earlier this year that she began questioning the validity of her transition and whether it was the right choice for her.
The lawsuit describes the actions of the doctors and healthcare facilities as negligent, claiming they failed to evaluate Breen’s mental health complexities and rushed her into procedures with long-term consequences. Breen emphasized that she doesn’t believe the providers acted maliciously but feels they should have approached her case with greater care and broader consideration.
The case has reignited debates about the medical and ethical protocols surrounding youth gender transitions, with Breen’s experience highlighting the challenges faced by individuals navigating such decisions amid other mental health struggles.
