The “death rattle” is a natural sound that occurs when a person is nearing the end of life, typically within 24 hours of passing. It happens when saliva and secretions collect in the throat due to the individual losing the ability to swallow. The sound, described as a crackling, wet noise or a gurgling/snoring sound, can be distressing to loved ones but does not cause discomfort to the person experiencing it.

Hospice Nurse Julie explains that the death rattle is a normal part of the dying process, often accompanied by fever and labored breathing. While the noise may seem alarming, it is simply a physiological response as the body shuts down.

Medical professionals can take steps to reduce the noise, such as repositioning the person onto their side, raising their head, or using medication to dry secretions. However, these measures don’t stop the process and are mainly for the comfort of those nearby.

Understanding the death rattle can provide reassurance to families and friends during a profoundly emotional time. It highlights the importance of education in easing fears about the natural stages of dying.
