The third season of Netflix’s Monster series will feature Ed Gein, infamously known as “The Butcher of Plainfield,” with actor Charlie Hunnam taking on the role. This announcement comes just days before the second season of Monster, which focuses on the Menendez brothers, is set to premiere. Ed Gein was a notorious figure in American criminal history, having murdered two women and become a prolific grave robber.
Gein’s disturbing actions inspired several iconic horror characters, such as Norman Bates in Psycho, Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, and Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. His gruesome crimes included using body parts from corpses to create household items and clothing, turning his home into a “house of horrors.” Gein was eventually caught when Bernice Worden, one of his victims, was reported missing, leading authorities to discover her body and other horrifying evidence in his home.
After his arrest, Gein admitted to multiple crimes, including grave robbing and necrophilia. Though found guilty of murder, he was deemed insane and spent the rest of his life in a mental institution. He passed away in 1984 at the age of 77. The upcoming season of Monster will explore these events, continuing the show’s focus on notorious true crime cases.
