A wedding in Qaraqosh, Iraq, turned into a tragic disaster when a fire broke out during the celebrations, killing 100 guests. The bride and groom, Haneen and Revan, survived but lost many family members in the blaze, which occurred at the Al Haytham Wedding Hall. The fire was reportedly started by indoor fireworks, which ignited the ceiling, causing it to collapse due to the use of flammable building materials. Over 150 guests were injured, with many requiring hospitalization.
Revan recounted the moment the ceiling started melting and how he tried to save Haneen, who was injured as people fled. Both newlyweds lost numerous family members, with Revan saying they are now “dead inside” from the emotional toll. Funerals have been held for many of the victims, and the couple has expressed that they may no longer be able to live in their community due to the trauma they’ve endured.
Eyewitnesses described the fire as rapidly engulfing the hall, leaving many trapped. One guest, Imad Yohana, noted that even those who escaped were broken by the horror they witnessed. The tragedy has brought attention to the dangers of using unsafe materials in public venues, and the couple is left grappling with the loss of their loved ones in what was meant to be a joyful celebration.
