Donald Trump brushed off Canada’s firm rejection of becoming the 51st U.S. state with a smug three-word comeback: “Never say never.” The moment came during Trump’s first official meeting with new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who reiterated that Canada is “not for sale.”

The two leaders met at the White House on May 6 following Carney’s recent election victory. While both men exchanged pleasantries and mutual praise—Trump called Carney a “very talented person,” and Carney described Trump as “a transformational president”—things turned tense when the topic of tariffs and annexation returned to the table.

Carney stated firmly that Canada would never become U.S. territory, likening it to iconic landmarks that can’t be bought. “Some places are never for sale,” he said. “Having met with the owners of Canada… it’s not for sale. Won’t be for sale, ever.” He also reminded Trump that Canadians are “masters in our own home.”

Trump’s only response: “Never say never.” He then added, “I’ve had many, many things that were not doable and ended up being doable.”

While Carney projected calm and determination during the exchange, a body language expert suggested he may have been slightly intimidated, despite his assertiveness. The symbolic elbow touch shared between the two leaders was interpreted as a cautious attempt to project mutual respect.

As far as diplomacy goes, it’s clear that the border between the U.S. and Canada may be friendly—but it’s also firmly drawn.
