Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Russia and Ukraine, demanding they reach a peace agreement “before it is too late.” In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that he is “strongly considering” large-scale banking sanctions and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and final settlement are reached. His comments follow a series of Russian attacks across Ukraine that left at least 18 people injured, including four children.
This latest development comes after Trump’s tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where discussions over a minerals deal and the path to peace reportedly fell apart. Following their dispute, Trump announced a pause on all U.S. military aid to Ukraine, stating that he is reevaluating support to ensure it contributes to a long-term resolution. The decision has been met with concern from Ukraine and its allies, as the U.S. has been a key provider of military assistance since Russia’s invasion began in 2022.

Since the start of the war, over 21,000 sanctions have been imposed on Russia by various countries, targeting industries such as oil and banking. However, Trump’s administration has yet to specify what new economic penalties he might enforce. The White House has stated that Trump remains committed to achieving peace but expects U.S. partners to support that goal.
As tensions rise, world leaders are closely watching how Russia will respond to Trump’s threat. While the UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to securing peace in Ukraine, it remains unclear whether Trump’s proposed economic pressure will bring negotiations closer or deepen divisions in the ongoing conflict.
