Former President Donald Trump has spoken out about surviving an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. The 78-year-old was giving a speech when shots rang out, and he was quickly bundled to the ground by his security detail. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was positioned on a rooftop about 130 meters away and was later shot dead by authorities. An AR-style rifle was recovered from the scene. Tragically, one rally-goer was killed, and two others were critically injured.

Trump, who sustained a wound to his right ear, described the incident as a “very surreal experience” and recounted how his doctor called his survival a miracle. “I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead,” he told the New York Post. Despite the chaos, Trump commended his security team, whom he described as “linebackers” for their quick and forceful response, noting that they hit him so hard his shoes fell off.

In videos from the aftermath, Trump can be heard asking for his shoes before being escorted away. Reflecting on the incident, he praised the Secret Service agents for their precision, noting that they took out the shooter with a single shot between the eyes. He also remarked on the iconic nature of a photo taken of him raising his fist to the crowd after the shooting, joking that it was the most iconic photo of him taken while he was alive.

Following the attempt on his life, Trump returned to campaigning, landing in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention. He exited his jet with a bandage covering his ear and once again raised his fist to the crowd. Despite the severity of the situation, Trump emphasized his resilience and determination to continue his political journey.
