Elon Musk reportedly wanted to hire a non-U.S. citizen for his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but Donald Trump’s administration shut it down. Sources say Musk pushed for Baris Akis, a venture capital executive, to join DOGE, but Trump firmly rejected the request.
DOGE, created without congressional approval, has already stirred controversy by gaining access to the U.S. Treasury’s payment system. While some exceptions exist, federal law generally prohibits non-citizens from working in government positions, making Musk’s request a legal gray area.
During a signing event, Trump made it clear that Musk operates under strict oversight. “Elon can’t do and won’t do anything without our approval,” he stated. “Where we think there is a conflict or problem, we won’t let him go near it.”
The news comes as Trump asserts control over high-profile decisions, including his recent comments about “taking over” Gaza. While Musk has considerable influence, this latest move reminds everyone that Trump is still the one in charge.
