American Olympic diver Alison Gibson recently updated fans on her condition following a painful collision with the springboard during the women’s 3m springboard preliminary event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. During her dive, Gibson’s feet struck the board, leading to an audible gasp from the audience and a zero score for the failed attempt. Despite the incident, Gibson completed the competition, displaying remarkable resilience.
“I hit my heels and my feet on the board,” Gibson explained in an interview. “I have cuts along the sides, and then I bruised my right heel pretty good, but I was determined to keep going.” She emphasized the importance of perseverance, hoping to set a good example for younger athletes. “I hope that anyone who is watching just was able to see what it looks like to get up and keep going even when things don’t go the way you want them to. It’s about the fight.”
Gibson managed to perform three more dives after the mishap, though it was not enough to lift her from last place. Fans expressed their concern on social media, relieved to learn that she had not sustained serious injuries. One user wrote, “Glad she’s okay and was able to walk out,” while another remarked on the inherent risks of the sport, saying, “Surprised this doesn’t happen more often, even at their level.”
The preliminary round was won by China’s Chen Yiwen, with Team GB’s Grace Reid and Yasmin Harper also qualifying for the semi-finals. Despite the setback, Gibson’s determination and spirit have left a lasting impression on viewers and fellow athletes alike.
