Allen Ray McGrew, a 41-year-old man from South Carolina, tragically died on July 4th after placing a lit firework on his head during a family celebration. The incident occurred around 10:30 PM when McGrew, dressed in a stars-and-stripes Uncle Sam outfit, was seen holding the firework over his top hat. According to his wife Paige, she initially thought he was merely showing off before setting the firework on the ground. However, she soon realized he had already ignited it. Despite her and others’ warnings, the firework exploded, causing McGrew to collapse. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:10 PM, with the coroner attributing his death to massive head injuries.
Paige McGrew recounted that her husband was not a regular drinker and had intended this celebration to be his last time drinking for a while. The Fourth of July party was also a dual celebration for their son Hunter’s engagement. Allen was described as a patriot who loved life and was excited to welcome a new daughter-in-law. This tragic event underscores the severe risks associated with handling fireworks, even those that are legal.
Public safety officials, including Chelsea Burkett from Cal Fire’s Santa Clara Unit, consistently warn against setting off fireworks without professional supervision due to the dangers they pose, such as starting fires. Medical professionals also caution against the use of illegal fireworks, which can cause life-altering injuries. Dr. Cliff Sheckter, Medical Director of the Regional Burn Center at Valley Medical Center, emphasized that injuries from fireworks, such as losing fingers or hands, are often irreparable.
The heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fireworks safety and the potential consequences of mishandling them. It highlights the need for public awareness and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
