The official cause of death for Dana Carvey’s son, Dex Carvey, has been disclosed. Dex passed away on November 15, 2023, at the age of 32. The LA County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed on January 23 that Dex Carvey’s cause of death was an accidental overdose, resulting from a lethal combination of fentanyl, ketamine, and cocaine.
This confirmation aligns with the initial statement made by Dex’s parents, Dana and Paula Carvey, last year, expressing the tragic loss due to an accidental drug overdose. Dana Carvey recently returned to work after a two-month hiatus and shared his gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans in coping with their family’s loss.
On the Fly on the Wall podcast, Carvey discussed his decision to resume work, citing the therapeutic value of “riffing with” his longtime friend and podcast co-host David Spade during the recovery process. Carvey acknowledged the challenge of dealing with grief and expressed the importance of laughter as a positive outlet.
He provided insight into the family’s coping mechanisms, emphasizing activities like hiking and attending church to keep moving forward. Carvey recognized that healing is a private journey for him, his wife, and their surviving son, Thomas Carvey, aged 31.
In their announcement of Dex’s passing, Carvey and his wife described their son as “extremely talented” and highlighted his love for life, family, friends, and his girlfriend, Kaylee. Despite the sorrow, they celebrated Dex’s vibrant personality and the joy he brought to those around him.
Dex had collaborated with his father on various TV series, showcasing his talent in The Funster (2013), Beyond The Comics (2014), and Carpool Pandering (2016). Dana Carvey shared a heartfelt photograph on Instagram, capturing a moment of joy with Dex and expressing the profound impact of their collaboration.
Carvey concluded by mentioning his intention to take a break from social media and work, focusing on navigating life as a family of three, including his younger son, Thomas Carvey.
