During the 2024 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift faced criticism from viewers for seemingly overlooking Celine Dion on stage after winning Album of the Year for “Midnights.”
Swift, celebrated for her hit “Anti-Hero,” was seen embracing collaborators Jack Antonoff and Lana Del Rey before quickly taking her award from Dion, who had made a surprise appearance to present the night’s final award. This moment did not go unnoticed, with an X (formerly Twitter) user commenting, “Taylor Swift fully ignoring Celine Dion like the disrespect even Celine was like… que?”
Another viewer expressed discomfort, stating, “Taylor Swift just took the album of the year trophy from Celine Dion without batting an eye and/or acknowledging that a legendary [GOAT] was handing her the award. So cringey for my soul.” Some went as far as to suggest that this incident would negatively impact Swift’s legacy, with tweets like “Taylor Swift will never EVER live down ignoring Céline Dion at the Grammys” and more critical voices adding, “Taylor Swift didn’t deserve AOTY and F—K HER for ignoring Celine Dion on stage.”
The incident also caught the attention of celebrities, including “Real Housewives of Potomac” star Candiace Dillard, who expressed disappointment on X: “I don’t like how Tay didn’t acknowledge Queen Celine. #GRAMMYs.” Kalen Allen, a media personality and former correspondent for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” also weighed in, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging Dion’s presence, especially given her significant return to the public eye amidst her battle with stiff person syndrome.
However, not all reactions were critical. Some viewers made light of the situation, with one joking, “Snatched that Grammy from Celine like a purse on Canal Street omg.” Others highlighted the significance of Dion’s appearance, considering her health challenges: “not trying to be hater but being handed a Grammy by Celine Dion in her very triumphant first public appearance in a long time and barely making eye contact insane.”
It’s important to note that Swift, 34, was seen singing along to Dion’s “The Power of Love” as Dion, 55, entered the stage, and the two were later observed sharing a hug and posing for photos backstage, dispelling any rumors of a rift.
Swift, who attended the event in a white Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown, was nominated in six categories and secured two awards, including best pop vocal album and album of the year for “Midnights.” Her win for Album of the Year marked a historic fourth victory in the category. Swift also took the opportunity to announce her next album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” set for release on April 19.
