In a harrowing incident that underscores the dangers of everyday electronic devices, a teenager nearly lost his life due to a freak accident involving a phone charger. Rayce Ogdahl, a 16-year-old from the US, experienced a traumatic electrocution when his metal cross necklace came into contact with an exposed prong of a charger plug, leading to severe burns around his neck.

The accident occurred late at night when Danielle Davis, Rayce’s mother, was awakened by her son’s screams for help. The situation unfolded quickly as Rayce, while trying to ensure his phone was still charging, accidentally allowed his necklace to touch the prongs of an extension cord plug that were slightly exposed. This contact created a complete electrical circuit around his neck, effectively trapping him in a painful and dangerous situation.

Rayce’s mother described the aftermath as terrifying, noting the smell of burnt hair and skin that filled their home. She immediately called for medical help, and Rayce was rushed to Integris Health Baptist Medical Center’s burns unit in Oklahoma. There, he was treated for second, third, and fourth-degree burns and admitted to the intensive care unit.

The medical team at the hospital has discussed the possibility of a skin graft due to the extent of the scarring, which spans from his chin to his collarbone. However, Rayce is hesitant to undergo the procedure unless absolutely necessary. The physical scars, deeply etched with the pattern of his necklace, will be a permanent reminder of the incident.

The accident not only left physical scars but also made Rayce much more aware of his surroundings and the potential hazards in everyday life. His mother expressed profound gratitude that he survived, emphasizing the lesson that no phone call or message is worth risking one’s safety. She advises against the use of extension cords and urges everyone to be mindful of their electronic devices and charging setups.

This incident serves as a crucial warning about the dangers of seemingly innocuous household items like phone chargers, especially when combined with conductive objects like metal jewelry. It highlights the importance of safety precautions and proper handling of all electronic and electrical equipment in the home.
